David Duchovny Rehabbing for Sex Addiction

The truth is out there, whether we want it or not.

David Duchovny has checked into rehab to undergo treatment for sex addiction, E! News has confirmed.

“I have voluntarily entered a facility for the treatment of sex addiction,” Duchovny said in a statement released Thursday by his attorney, Stanton “Larry” Stein. “I ask for respect and privacy for my wife and children as we deal with this situation as a family.”

The 48-year-old X-Files star—who, ironically, won a Golden Globe this year for playing an over-sexed struggling writer on Showtime’s Californication—has been married to Téa Leoni since May 1997. They have two children together, daughter Madelaine West, 9, and son Kyd Miller, 6.

“All of us at Showtime wish David and his family the best during this very private time,” Richard Licata, the network’s executive VP of Corporate Communications, said in a statement to E! News.

The second season of Californication, premiering Sept. 28, finished shooting late last month and 12 episodes are ready to go.

Though it may have been awhile, this isn’t the first time Duchovny’s sex life has turned into a talking point.

“I’m not a sex addict,” he said in an interview with Playgirl in 1997. “I have never been to those meetings. It’s hurtful to my family and if I was involved with a woman in a monogamous relationship, it would be hurtful to her.

“There was another story claiming I was a neat freak. If I had to choose one of the two, I think I’d rather be a sex addict. It’s not funny and I’ll be glad when it goes away.”

Uncomfortably enough, Leoni herself quashed a rumor that her hubby was afflicted with a sex addiction back in May of 1998, telling Elle that she found the notion “very exciting.”

“David was accused of being a sex addict,” Leoni, who had been married for one year at that point, said. “Which I always found very exciting. And then I found out it wasn’t true.”

“Men are like bulls,” she continued. “They gotta get the new cow. Maybe you’ve got to get the bull after he’s had a lot of cows, so you might just be the last new one.”

So it’s no surprise to anyone that this week is a big deal. We haven’t really plugged it here because it just hasn’t seemed real. It’s still hard to process: the NACCCs are here in Chicago. More work than you could ever imagine has been put into making this a success. It’s scary how good this will be. Holy crap, it’s so soon! IT’S THIS FUCKING WEEKEND!! “Labor day weekend, 2008!” Do you have any idea how many times we’ve told that to people? I’m going to say 946…this month at least.

So many people are amazed to see what Chicago has to offer as a host city. They sure as hell won’t be let down. Aside from the visitors, mostly every local is in for something s/he has never seen before. Imagine 300 messengers from all over the world coming to have a good time and see what Chicago has to offer. Top male and female messenger champions will get tickets to Tokyo to participate in the World’s next year. Every genuine dive bar, good restaurant, realest of bike shops, and loyal manufacturer will see their faithful clientèle skyrocket and finally gather in one place to hang out, race and have a good time. No lies, it’s going to be a little intimidating, but at the end of the day, all that really matters is whether or not you hardened up and gave it a shot to participate. After that you’ll truly understand what this craze, this fascination, this addiction, what this love is all about. NACCCs are such a beautiful thing. We’re doin’ it the Chicago way. Be sure not to miss out on it.

The feature of the NACCC is and always has been a race. The race is done a closed course within the city. Saturday is a day long qualifier followed by a Sunday final race. Each year, the host city creates a controlled environment that mimics the stresses and excitement of everyday work for bike messengers. Since this event floats from city to city, it usually incorporates a taste of each city’s unique challenges. The top male finisher and top female finisher to handle the course and workload the swiftest is then crowned Male and Female Champion of North America, respectively. We all then hail them as the greatest things to ever do this job.
